Public:HowTos:Thunderbird Background Sending
Configuring Thunderbird to send in the background is a nice feature that in my opinion should be on by default. But since it's not up to me, here is how to do it.
- Open thunderbird
 - Press F10 and go to Edit->Preferences
 - Choose the "Advanced" Section and go to the "General" tab
 - Click the "Config Editor..." button
 - Click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button
 - Change the Following
- Set mailnews.show_send_progress to false
 - Set mailnews.sendInBackground to true
 - Set offline.send.unsent_messages to 1

 - Now close the config window and the Preferences windows
 - Close and reopen Thunderbird
