Configuring Thunderbird to send in the background is a nice feature that in my opinion should be on by default. But since it's not up to me, here is how to do it.

  1. Open thunderbird
  2. Press F10 and go to Edit->Preferences
  3. Choose the "Advanced" Section and go to the "General" tab
  4. Click the "Config Editor..." button
  5. Click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button
  6. Change the Following
    • Set mailnews.show_send_progress to false
    • Set mailnews.sendInBackground to true
    • Set offline.send.unsent_messages to 1
  7. Now close the config window and the Preferences windows
  8. Close and reopen Thunderbird
